Learning is Another Word for Fun: Why We Don't Need to Gamify Boring Learning

Tue May 10th, 2022 07:00 - 08:00
Sarah Le-Fevre Ludogogy

Learning is the fundamental building block of experiences which are “fun.” Use ‘gamification’ to make learning ‘engaging’ or more palatable. Well-designed learning will necessarily resemble ‘games’ because if it’s not fun, then it isn’t learning. Let’s reflect on the nature of the relationship between learning and fun and workshop experiences which construct ‘fun’ from the building blocks of learning – relevance, attainment, progress, the fail, hypothesize, experiment cycle, discover and surprise, etc.

Sarah Le-Fevre

Sarah Le-Fevre is a games-based learning professional, specializing in the use of games for adult learning around big systemic issues, like climate change, inequality, racism and so on. She also runs and edits Ludogogy, an online games-based learning, gamification and gameful design magazine. Sarah is a passionate believer in the power of play to make a better world, and to reveal, individually, our better (best) natures.

Design non farmable actions that activate strategic thinking. Apply decision trees for strategic choices Create windows of opportunity to empower learners.

Javier Velasquez

Javier Velasquez studied Literature and a Master’s in Literature at Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. His professional studies helped him understand how to analyze media in a systemic way, as his main concerns were interdisciplinary studies. Since 2012 he shifted towards game design and founded a board game publisher, Azahar Games. In 2013 he assisted the GSummit and started making research on game design and gamification. Alongside his sister, Ana María Velasquez, a PhD in Human Development and Motivation, they started working on a Gamification framework (BEM) that used the idea of feedback and intrinsic motivation in its core. This framework has been validated in different fields, like innovation, human resources, loyalty campaigns, and specially in education, which is a big part of their intrinsic motivation. Javier sees Gamification not as a tool of design, but as a field with paradigms and objects of study that go beyond the use of standardized mechanics.

Beyond PBL: On the Quest for Meaningful Mechanics

Wed May 11th, 2022 01:30 - 02:30
Moe Ash The Catalyst

Gamification systems & game based learning designs are all about crafting a set of decisions & choices that are meticulously selected to let the learner experience a specific learning parameter. There is always a strategy behind it and a collection of mechanics that push the learners’ behaviors forward towards the set learning objectives.

Those mechanics don’t always have to be the famous points, badges & leaderboards. On the contrary, there are a huge number of mechanics that influence people’s motivation to learn & fail.

In our session, we will go through the concept of choice and a number of mechanics that were used in real-actual gamification systems.

Moe Ash is a learning architect dedicated to the notion of designing learning experiences. He holds a BSC degree in Human Resources Management and a degree in Economics from Sadat Academy for Management Sciences , a master’s degree in International Development and community psychology diploma from the American University in Cairo. Are We Gaming the System? Gamification & Ethics

Wed May 11th, 2022 05:30 - 06:30
Melinda Jacobs Subatomic / Perkio

Gamification is often seen as a quick win, a silver bullet. It’s treated as if there is an inherent *magic* and *power* to game mechanics that, when implemented, act as human cheat codes that allow us to motivate (or manipulate) people.

In this talk, Melinda will show you why this understanding of gamification presents the greatest risk to ethical design. When we look at mechanics alone, like a leaderboard, as holding the power, we miss the true source, our intentions. This is why ethical gamification comes down to system design.

Melinda Jacobs

Melinda Jacobs is a gamification expert, tech entrepreneur and N7 paragon. She’s a geeky nerd who found a way to combine her love of games and her fascination with people’s behavior into an award-winning expertise. As the founder of the digital experience agency Subatomic, she’s helped companies and organizations develop interactive experiences that change behavior through play, games, and gamification for over 10 years. Her current role is as a founder and co-CEO of Perkio where she’s on a mission to improve wellbeing in organizations through gamification and data science. She routinely gives talks around the world on playful design, behavioral science, and technology ethics.

Design the Virtual World of your Dreams: IN 1 HOUR!

Wed May 11th, 2022 11:00 - 12:00
Eric Bubar Marymount University

Virtual Reality and the so-called metaverse are poised to explode in popularity with the advent of low-cost, tetherless VR headsets (e.g. Oculus Quest). But how difficult is it to get into these virtual worlds? In this session you will learn how to CONFIGURE an Oculus Quest 2 for development work, SETUP the Unity physics engine for VR development and CREATE a basic VR puzzle. With these skills, you will be able to design a variety of immersive learning experiences.

Eric Bubar

My formal degree is in Applied Physics with a research concentration in Stellar Astrophysics. I use these general research skills in developing open source solutions for individuals in need of assistive technologies by using hobbyist microcontrollers, electronics and 3D printing/design. Through this work I have collaborated with individuals worldwide (largely through eNABLE and the Alliance for Project Based Learning Solutions) to create and deploy upper limb assistive devices that provide some of the functionality offered by prosthetic limbs in situations where medically validated devices are unavailable. Through my research lab at Marymount University, I work on creating solutions to problems as diverse as adapting devices to allow children with limb differences to play musical instruments to creating tools to aid police officers with rehabilitation exercises. Most recently I have brought a virtual reality development lab to the university. I design virtual reality STEM-themed escape rooms and work with the Marymount Center for Optimal Aging to create gamified rehabilitation/exercise experiences and simulations allowing practice of ADLs (Activities of Daily Living)

BookWidgets: Where Learning and Engagement Become One!

Wed May 11th, 2022 13:30 - 15:00
Rasha Morsi, PhD

This Hands-On learning lab session will review the BookWidgets tool. BookWidgets is a tool that provides an easy, zero programming way to gamify your training or course. We will work in groups to practice what we have learned so make sure to come ready with content to use! By the end of the Session, the learner will be able to:

  • Use BookWidgets with some proficiency to be able to generate widgets
  • Compare and contrast the different widgets to select the appropriate one for the task at hand.
  • Apply knowledge learned from the session to create a gamified widget
